NEW YORK (PIX11) -- New York State Attorney General Letitia James spoke about the dangers of social media at an event in Brooklyn Heights on Wednesday.
It comes on the same day the CEOs of the major social media companies testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
James was joined by State Sen. Andrew Gounardes and Larissa May, the founder of #HalfTheStory.
James said she and the attorneys general of 42 states are suing Big Tech for allegedly failing to protect children and teens from cyberbullying, sexual exploitation and other harms.
"We can't stand idly by and do absolutely nothing in the face of all these children struggling and suffering," James said.
Serena Greene, 19, was among those who attended the event. She is working on a project about social media for her school.
Greene said that back in middle school, social media "gave me a lot of anxiety issues and self-esteem issues. I basically became consumed with it, so much to the point that it affected how I talked to people."
