NEW YORK (PIX11) -- Have you ever been flustered with the amount of documents that need to be presented to TSA security officers at airport checkpoints?
The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles has made the process easier with a new app that allows New Yorkers to have digital versions of their state-issued driver's license.
The app, New York Mobile ID, is available for both Android and iOS on Google Play and in the App Store.
The digital driver's licenses will be accepted at TSA security checkpoints at nearly 30 participating airports, including LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports. Participating terminals will be marked with signage indicating that they accept digital identity documents.
Travelers do not need to hand their smartphones to TSA officers as the identity readers will scan the digital documents.
All information stored on the app is encrypted and transmitted through a secure, digital connection. Users can choose what data to share, for example, proving their age when purchasing alcohol without sharing other information like their address.
New Yorkers should continue to carry a physical driver's license of ID as not all businesses will initially accept mobile IDs.
