New York City schools use Minecraft video game to teach students valuable skills

NEW YORK (PIX11) -- New York City students are playing video games in class and helping create careers and the city of the future. 

Minecraft is an online video game that involves skill and strategy as players create structures, solve problems, and interact with the environment.   

School teachers can use the adventure game to support learning and create lessons on various topics. 

The NYC Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment is sponsoring the second annual Mayor's Cup on Saturday at the Brooklyn Central Library.

At John Dewey High School in Gravesend, Brooklyn, on the border with Coney Island, the Minecraft Club has been meeting to prepare for this year's competition. They won last year. 

Microsoft created the adventure game and has encouraged and supported its educational uses. 

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said video game developers are needed in the city as the industry moves in. 

Students said it teaches teamwork and communication.
