NEW YORK (PIX11) — Before all eyes turn to the big game, we'll be watching the sky in New York City.
A heavy dose of snow is predicted for Saturday afternoon and the city is prepping to keep everyone safe. New Yorkers are asked to do their part, too.
Thousands of sanitation workers will clear the streets and local residents can track them. Plow NYC is the website where you can track the progress of snow removal vehicles from the Department of Sanitation in real-time.
While the DOT clears streets and bike lanes, remember property owners are responsible for clearing sidewalks. Snow can be moved against the building, to the curb line, or areas on private property but not pushed into the street or a bike lane.
Rules about clearing the sidewalk are based on when the snow stops falling. During the day, property owners have four hours. In the evening, there’s a longer grace period and an overnight snowfall needs to be cleared by 11 a.m. the next morning.
Residents can be fined $100 for failing to clear the area in front of their home.
More than 700 salt spreaders are filled and officials at the sanitation department say they have a historically high 700 million pounds of salt ready to go.
"In NYC you have the finest the bravest we're constantly watching everything that is going on," said Zach Iscol, the NYC OEM Commissioner.
The Office of Emergency Management also encourages people to stay informed by following city social media accounts. If residents need help, they can call 311.
