New York City launches Summer Rising program for 110,000 students

NEW YORK (PIX11) -- New York City launched the summer school program known as 'Summer Rising' on Tuesday, marking a big day for thousands of children around the city.

The program combines classic reading, writing, and arithmetic with summer camp type events.

It's a formula that has work well for students and this year, a whopping 110,000 students are taking part.

This year, the program has kicked off in better financial health than in recent years. For the first time since 2021, the Department of Education will cover its $80 million portion of the tab.

A typical day features a mix of academic support, social emotional learning, and enrichment activities, including field trips, arts activities, and outdoor recreation.

MTA extends subway service to meet summer travel demand

The big buzz on opening day is an upcoming field trip to Hershey Park.

Summer Rising is free and available to all NYC students in grades K-8, pending seat availability. This year, 138,000 students applied for the 110,000 spots available.
