HARRISON, N.J. (PIX11) -- The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey marked the completion of a new $47.2 million station house at the PATH Harrison stop on Wednesday.
Hundreds of thousands of people move back and forth every day between New York and New Jersey.
The newest train station remodel in the network has been a long time coming and cements the area’s future as a transit hub.
PATH’s Harrison Station is one stop away from Newark Penn and a 15-minute ride to New York City.
PATH carries about 183,000 daily weekday riders. It’s not as large as the 3.8 million number of riders who use New York City transit.
But the New Jersey neighborhood is growing and the system has to keep up.
Red Bull Arena is within walking distance and was built in 2010. New residential and commercial construction is creating a new skyline for Harrison.
The $250 million renovation of the station creates a new complex with easier access and elevators.
“This is a special day for PATH and for all of the men and women who put their hearts and souls into creating this impressive new station house,” said Clarelle DeGraffe, general manager and director of PATH. “Our enduring mission is to continually improve service and access to the best facilities for our customers, and today is another powerful example of that commitment.”
The stop was first created more than a hundred years ago by the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad.
PATH has invested $1 billion in the system including new signals and adding car stock.
Capacity has been running around 60% to 70% pre-pandemic levels.
