NEW YORK (PIX11) – Safety barriers have been installed at a Brooklyn subway station as part of the MTA's mission to keep platforms safe.
The barriers can be found at the Clark Street station in Brooklyn Heights. The MTA said it's trying to get creative when it comes to passenger safety, and that this pilot program is a big step forward.
The main goal is to stop what the MTA calls "track trespassing," which is when people get onto the train tracks either intentionally or unintentionally.
The MTA said cases of people ending up on the tracks shot up 20% from 2019 to 2021, even as ridership fell during the pandemic. The same report said that in 2021, 68 people died after ending up on the tracks.
The MTA said that the upward trend continued in 2022.
The Clark Street station is the second to have railings installed. The barriers were put in place at the 191st Street station last week.
Two more stations in Brooklyn will have barriers installed next, according to the MTA. That includes the West 8th Street-NY Aquarium stop and another station not yet revealed.
