QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) -- Cannabis is big business in New York.
The number of adult-use legal cannabis dispensaries in New York State has almost tripled since Dec.
The New York State Cannabis Control Board, which regulates the industry, says 70 dispensaries are operating in the state.
NYC Bud opened on Friday along Vernon Boulevard in Long Island City. The shop’s interior theme is centered around the subway platform and NYC.
Giancarlo Pinto is one of the three partners. A longtime friend also owned nightclubs and a cousin has a previous marijuana-related offense.
Social justice and business background are required by the state for the license.
“This is like a time capsule on top of terrific cannabis products,” said Pinto.
$183 million in sales have been reported in the state from legal cannabis sales.
New York collects a 13% tax; sales began about 13 months ago.
At a meeting Friday, 109 Licenses including 38 new dispensary licenses were approved. The board also approved the first set of regulations for personal-use home cultivation.
That begins a 60-day public comment period on the proposal which would allow adults no more than six mature and six immature plants per private residence.
