Netflix’s next live sporting event is “
Netflix
Slam,” a
tennis match
between
Rafael Nadal
and
Carlos Alcaraz
. The exhibition match is scheduled for Sunday, March 3, hosted at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in
Las Vegas
.
The event will showcase a match between Rafael Nadal, who has won 22 major tennis singles titles, and Carlos Alcaraz, who is currently ranked as the World No.
2 and winner of two major titles.
“I’m very excited for my first visit to Las Vegas,” Nadal told Netflix. “I’m also very excited to be playing with my fellow countryman Carlos Alcaraz. I am sure it will be a fantastic night of tennis.”
Netflix has stated that it will reveal more players and matchups in the future.
“I’m honoured and so happy to be sharing the court with Rafa in Las Vegas,” US Open and
Wimbledon
champion Alcaraz told Netflix. “He’s an all-time great, of course, and his records and achievements speak for themselves.”
Netflix is planning a dual broadcast for the match in both English- and Spanish for both markets.
Earlier this year, Netflix forayed into the sports live streaming with "Netflix Cup," a golf tournament that pitted F1 drivers from the
Formula 1
documentary series "Drive to Survive" against golfers who starred in the "Full Swing."
Streaming platforms are looking to benefit from the growing interest in sports.
Amazon
has made significant investments in multi-year agreements with sports leagues, including the NFL's "Thursday Night Football".
Apple
has also secured deals with Major League Baseball and Major League Soccer. NBCUniversal's Peacock provides access to MLB games, WWE content, and other events. It is unlikely that Netflix will be acquiring rights to seasonal sports, however, the word is that the streaming giant is interested in the NBA’s In-Season Tournament.
