Actor Nayanthara, who has often portrayed strong women characters in her films, recently opined that playing 'an empowered woman' on screen is not just her creative choice but also a personal commitment to amplify the voices that are silenced. The actor was last seen in 'Annapoorani: The Goddess of Food', her 75th film.
“Portraying empowered women who choose to defy social stigmas is not just a creative choice but also a personal commitment to amplifying voices that are often overlooked or silenced,” Nayanthara said while speaking to GQ in a recent interview. The actor's name was mentioned in the magazine's list of 'Most Influential Young Indians of 2024'.
The actor's film 'Annapoorani' ran into trouble as several tagged it as 'anti-Hindu'. Subsequently, Netflix removed the film from its library.
The film is about Annapoorani (played by Nayanthara), who hails from a conservative Brahmin family from Tamil Nadu's Srirangam. She aims to become a top chef in India. However, she faces obstacles as she is torn between her passion and orthodox ideals. With support from classmate Farhan (played by Jai), she steps out of her comfort zone and begins eating meat.
Nayanthara also made her Bollywood debut last year with Shah Rukh Khan in Atlee's 'Jawan'. Her performance as a no-nonsense police office was appreciated by the cinephiles.
Next, the actor will be seen alongside Nivin Pauly in the upcoming Malayalam film 'Dear Students'. The two announced the new film on their respective Instagram pages on April 14.
