AGRA:
Naima Khatoon
made history as the first woman vice- chancellor of
Aligarh Muslim University
(AMU) in over 100 years. An AMU alumna and principal of the university’s Women’s College, she has been appointed to the post for five years.
In an interview with TOI, she said, “As vice-chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, I aim to strengthen the values and morals instilled by our founder, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan.
I envision AMU emerging as a modern minority institution and a leading centre of futuristic learning in the country."
About the issues she’ll address first, she said, "I do not see issues as problems. As a positivist, I view them as a natural consequence of our university's diversity. With an open mind and positive outlook, I’ll work to improve existing practices, guided by amiability and harmony."
Addressing objections to her appointment, she said, "Jobs are earned by overcoming obstacles. Those who reach heights in academic leadership face challenges, and I see each obstacle as a means to strengthening my resolve. My appointment is a testament to our progress and I’m confident that leadership capability transcends gender. My focus remains on serving the university to the best of my abilities."
She added, "My gender does not define my ability to lead; my
qualifications
, experience, and vision do."
Regarding the recent arrest of former AMU students allegedly involved with IS, she said, "I believe in upholding the defining feature of the campus, which is to contribute positively to the society and nation, and to uphold the law and ethical standards."
Regarding claims of daily violent incidents on campus, she clarified, "There are no violent incidents on campus, and saying they happen every day is an exaggeration. Minor issues may arise on such a large residential campus, but they are dealt with promptly."
Asked about her satisfaction with the current atmosphere at AMU, she said, "If I were satisfied with things, it would deter me from working for improvement. Each vice- chancellor has contributed to academic excellence; I will also strive to enhance the university in the interest of students, teachers, and the institution."
