CIVIC CENTER, Manhattan (PIX11) -- At least 15 people were taken into custody on Thursday by agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement while trying to obtain citizenship at a federal court in New York City, according to Rep. Dan Goldman's office.
Goldman said he observed ICE agents detaining people who were attending routine immigration court appearances.
The congressman said he had been watching court proceedings Thursday morning at the Executive Office for Immigration Review at 290 Broadway when ICE agents began detaining both immigrants and observers.
The report from Goldman came after at least 23 people were taken into custody during a protest outside a U.S. immigration court on Wednesday night, according to the NYPD.
Protesters told PIX11 News they showed up after hearing about migrants being carried away in white vans from the courthouse after attending their immigration appointments earlier in the day on Wednesday.
Families were left with no information about where their loved ones were going or why, protestors said.
