Conservative commentator and YouTuber Benny Johnson posted a comparison image of Trump’s inauguration portrait and his mugshot, on Wednesday. He wrote, "Trump really went with the mugshot aesthetic for the new Presidential Portrait.
Trump chose violence."
His tweet quickly gained traction with many of Trump’s supporters voicing strong approval. @Xmade, wrote, "Trump chose the photo that solidified his base! When they started their lawfare, we all knew what it was, and he’s thanking us for seeing him through! This isn’t violence, this is strength! You are embarrassing, Benny!"
"No more Mr. Nice Guy. He's in it this time!," wrote @PattiGillihan. Meanwhile, @Rigghht called him “low key the best troller in human history."
The mugshot
Trump’s mugshot from August 2023, was taken at Fulton County Jail in Georgia. The mugshot, captured during his surrender in the election racketeering case, features Trump’s stern gaze and has become a defining image of his political journey.
A campaign booster
Trump’s campaign quickly capitalised on the mugshot, turning it into a rallying symbol. Merchandise featuring the image, along with the phrase “Never Surrender,” flooded his official store. From T-shirts to mugs, the items generated millions in donations, energising his voter base.
The mugshot also featured in memes shared by Trump, portraying it as a badge of honour. One such meme, praised by Elon Musk on X, linked the mugshot to Trump’s designation as Time magazine’s 2024 Person of the Year, reinforcing his narrative of a political comeback.
