NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) -- The MTA responded on Tuesday after calling for New York Road Runners to pay $750,000 for shutting down the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge during its annual marathon.
“New York Road Runners makes more than $15 million on Marathon Day from entry fees alone and should pay its necessary expenses that include taking over a bridge at the starting line—just like the MTA covers its own costs for workers to run trains, give directions and clean stations along the route,” MTA Bridges and Tunnels President Catherine Sheridan said.
The agency is asking the New York Road Runners Club to pay for the lost toll revenue while the bridge is closed, according to a report from the New York Times.
The demand works out to $15 per runner, which is double the price of the Verrazano E-ZPass toll.
Last year, subway ridership to attend the TCS New York City Marathon hit post-pandemic record numbers with 2,304,683 paid rides, the highest ridership in four years, according to Gov. Kathy Hochul.
