Motorola is back with a new flip phone -- the Moto Razr 50 Ultra -- and I am loving it. The compact form factor and a foldable phone with solid hardware is a blessing. It is priced at Rs 99,999 and is more expensive compared to the previous version. Yes, the price has increased by Rs 15,000, but it is pretty justifiable because of big upgrades in most of the areas. And what are these and how is the smartphone in general? Here is my quick review after using the device for a few days.
Motorola Razr 50 Ultra quick review
The Motorola Razr 50 Ultra offers a blend of nostalgia and modern functionality in a compact package. The company has made improvements in several areas to offer a better experience to users who admire flip phones. The cover screen is now bigger and better. The quality of both inner and outer display is top-notch, with vibrant colours and sharp details that make watching videos or browsing photos a pleasure. There is no gap between the screens when folded and Motorola has managed to keep screen creases to a minimum, so the viewing experience is smooth without the distracting lines.
In an era where smartphones are becoming increasingly larger, the compact size of the Razr 50 Ultra is a breath of fresh air. It's incredibly easy to slip into your pocket or bag, making it perfect for those who are always on the go. This compactness doesn’t come at the expense of usability; the device feels solid and fits comfortably in hand, aided by the vegan leather finish that offers a good grip.
The external display of the Razr 50 Ultra can handle most of your daily tasks without needing to open the phone. Whether you are checking notifications, taking a quick photo, using Maps or a music app, or responding to messages, the outer screen is up to the task. The cover screen now supports 1Hz-165Hz refresh rate, which automatically gets adjusted based on the content to save battery life.
All-in-all, the display quality is excellent. The similar is also the case with the main screen, which is of 6.9-inch size when the device is unfolded. The hinge of the Moto Razr 50 Ultra is robust, allowing for smooth opening and closing. You can even use it in tent mode, which is great for hands-free video calls or media consumption. However, one minor drawback is its inability to stay open at a 130-degree angle; it locks firmly at 90 degrees. While this isn't a dealbreaker, it’s a limitation to be aware of if you prefer using your phone at different angles.
The phone offers a single SIM slot, which could be a downside for those who rely on dual SIM functionality. Fortunately, an eSIM option is available, which provides some flexibility. However, if you’re accustomed to using two physical SIM cards simultaneously, this might be a bit of a compromise.
Under the hood, there is Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chipset. The Motorola Razr 50 Ultra has received a major upgrade in terms of camera and the latest version now a telephoto camera sensor as well. The device packs a 50-megapixel f/1.7 main camera and a 50-megapixel f/2.0 telephoto sensor with 2x optical zoom. It even features a slightly bigger 4,000mAh battery with support for 45W wired charging and 15W wireless charging. Unlike some other big tech brands, Motorola ships a 68W fast charger along with the smartphone and the box also includes a pair of wireless earphones, tuned by Bose. Since we are still testing the device, we won't be able to comment much on the performance part.
Overall, the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra looks promising. It seemingly strikes a good balance between style and functionality, making it a worthy consideration for anyone in the market for a foldable phone. With launch discount offers, one will be able to buy this Motorola flip phone at an effective price of Rs 89,999.
