YONKERS, N.Y. (PIX11) -- The mother of a newborn baby is facing a felony charge after abandoning her child at a Yonkers apartment complex earlier this week, police said Thursday.
The baby girl was first discovered in a hallway of a building located on Chestnut Street. Officers found the baby wrapped in a blanket on the first floor of the building, police said.
First responders noticed the umbilical cord was still attached with a black string wrapped around it. The child was taken to a local hospital for treatment, police said.
“The circumstances that occurred are heartbreaking and unfortunate, but we are thankful the baby is stable and safe,” Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano said. “I commend the compassionate and swift actions of our Yonkers PD in finding the mother, exhibiting concern for her welfare after going through a traumatic and desperate ordeal.”
The mother was found Thursday after investigators reviewed security footage from the complex. Detectives determined the mother had given birth to the baby girl on Monday at about 3:30 p.m., police said.
Before leaving, she dressed the baby in a T-shirt, wrapped her in a blanket, and placed her in the hallway of 32 Chestnut St. around 7:30 pm., authorities said. An hour later, a resident of the building found the abandoned infant, wrapped her in an additional blanket, and then called for police assistance, officials said.
The 21-year-old resident of Yonkers was arrested and charged with one count of abandonment of a child, a felony.
The mother was released without bail. Sources told PIX11 News the mother was staying at the Chestnut Street apartment building when she gave birth.
