THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) -- Police said an arrest warrant has been issued for the mother of 5-year-old twins who died Dec. 18 in the Bronx.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said Tuesday that 42-year-old Gloria Asamoah was indicted in the Bronx on multiple felony accounts, including two counts of murder.

"[The] autopsy reveals that both kids, cause of death was asphyxia, meaning that they were choked. At this time, we have an arrest warrant for Mom; she's back in a psych ward, and she's not free to leave at any given time," Kenny said.

Kenny said Asamoah was first hospitalized for mental issues after the death of her children. She initially told the police the children wouldn't stop vomiting, and she found them unresponsive in their beds.

Police said both children had autism and were seemingly well taken care of by Asamoah and her husband of 10 years.

"No prior active ACS cases, there was food in the fridge, plenty of clothing for the kids, school interviews resulted in saying the mom was very involved with the kids, had taken an active role in their lives," Kenny said.

The children's father was at work in Port Chester on the mornings of the murders and is not expected to be charged.
