MILLBURN, N.J. (PIX11) -- A woman and her daughter were trapped by a bear on the South Mountain Reservation in Essex County, N.J., on Monday, according to officials.
A woman called to request help for her and her daughter, who encountered a bear in the Locust Grove section of the reservation around 11:30 a.m. Officers were able to locate the woman and her daughter, along with other people inside the park, according to officials.
The officers attempted to lead the group out of the reservation when the bear reappeared on the path, blocking the directions of the reservation's exit, according to officials.
The officers tried to get the bear to go back into the woods, but the bear "unfortunately gave them no choice, for their safety and the safety of anyone else in the immediate area," the officers killed the bear, according to officials.
In June last year, on the same reservation in the Maplewood portion, a 13-year-old girl, a woman, and a dog were attacked by a coyote, according to officials.
