Real Madrid star-midfielder and Croatia captain Luka Modric sent a special farewell message to India captain Sunil Chhetri ahead of his final international game before retirement. Ahead of India's FIFA World Cup qualifier against Kuwait on June 6, coach Igor Stimac shared Modric's message, in which Los Blancos number 10 congratulated Chhetri on his iconic 19-year-long iconic international career. Having announced his retirement back on May 16, Indian football fans and even former players have since been geared up for the final dance of Chhetri at the Salt Lake stadium in Kolkata.
Chhetri's prestigious career has seen him clinch multiple records, and has often seen him net ever-crucial goals for India when they required their skipper to step up and lead the side. Having made his national team debut back on June 12, 2005 in a friendly against Pakistan, Chhetri has gone on to put his name alongside other football icons like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Chhetri is the third-highest goalscorer in men's international football with his 94 goals, trailing just to Ronaldo and Messi. On Thursday, the 39-year-old 'Captain Fantastic' will want to end his India journey on a winning note, which will also help the chances of the side going through to the next round.
"Hi Sunil! I just wanna say hello and wish you all the best for your last game with national team. Congratulations on your career. You are a legend of this game, and to your teammates, I hope you make his last game special and unforgettable. Good luck and win for your captain. All the best and love from Croatia," Modric said in his video.
Modric is currently in Germany, preparing with his side for their UEFA Euro 2024 campaign. The iconic midfielder had just won his sixth UEFA Champions League title with Real Madrid this season on June 2.
