NEW JERSEY (PIX11) – Mikie Sherrill has won the Democratic primary for New Jersey governor, according to the Associated Press.

Sherrill will now represent the Democratic party in the November general election to fill the current Gov. Phil Murphy’s seat. Murphy was elected in 2018 and is reaching his term limit this year.

It was a crowded democratic pool, with candidates including Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, state Sen. Steve Sweeney, New Jersey Education Association President Sean Spiller, Congressman Josh Gottheimer, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, and Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill.

A recent poll by PIX11, Emerson College and The Hill revealed Newark Airport, the economy, and the Trump administration are key priorities for New Jersey voters this election. It also found that about 24% of Democratic voters were still undecided just weeks ahead of the election.

The mid-May PIX11 poll identified Sherrill as a frontrunner in the race with a 28% share of the vote.
