Migrant shelter causes disturbances in Queens neighborhood

LONG ISLAND CITY, Queens (PIX11) -- Neighbors in a Queens community say they are tired of loud noise, garbage, and kids hanging out in the streets late in the evening keeping them up.

The building they live in is right next to a migrant shelter in Long Island City.

Neighbors say this situation has been going on for around 6 months.

Long nights with loud music, kids playing outside unsupervised at late night hours and garbage around the neighborhood are among the issues tenants on 10th Street and 44th have to deal with.

Kiko has been living in this building for 32 years and has never seen anything like it. It all started when the once 128-room Windham hotel was turned into a NYC migrant shelter.

He and other neighbors have seen kids riding up and down the sidewalk, jumping off porches, and at times taking showers by the spigot and even taking water to cook meals right on the street.

Anderson Corro has been living at this shelter with his wife and two kids for approximately three months. He says people staying at the shelter have to sign in and out and a 9 p.m. curfew was implemented as of last Thursday to ensure families and kids are in their rooms at that time.

Corro adds the only people who are allowed to stay out past 9 are those who have a special permit, usually related to their shift at work.

However, Kiko says that is not the case. "I see a lot of people after 9 pm a lot of kids I see them at 12 and 1 o’clock with their bicycles."

Migrants evicted from shelters face limited housing options

Neighbors say that while they know those families need a place to live and be in a safe place, they want more regulation and supervision to guarantee the safety of the neighborhood and the kids.

PIX11 News reached out to the City of New York to see what other regulations they will implement, if any but we haven’t heard back.
