Migrant charged with attempted murder for allegedly shooting 2 NYPD officers

EAST ELMHURST, Queens (PIX11) --- A migrant is accused of shooting of shooting two NYPD officers in Queens on Monday, police said.

Bernardo Raul Castro-Mata, 19, was charged Tuesday with two counts of attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of a weapon, and resisting arrest, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny.

The officers, identified as Richard Yarusso and Christopher Abreu, were chasing down a suspect when he opened fire, according to the NYPD. Yarusso was shot near his stomach, but saved by his bulletproof vest. Abreu was shot in the leg.
