MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) --- One of the migrants accused of assaulting two NYPD cops in Times Square last month was released from jail on Tuesday, according to city records.
Yohenry Brito, 24, was held at Rikers Island since his arrest in connection to the Jan. 27 attack on police officers in Midtown, according to police and the NYC Department of Correction.
The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Brooklyn paid the $15,000 bail to free Brito, according to the New York Post. A reverend told the Post the church is essentially a sanctuary church.
Brito is one of nine migrants who were arrested and charged in connection with the brawl in Times Square, police said. Brito, allegedly at the center of the melee with cops, was indicted on charges including two counts of assault.
The altercation began after a pair of police officers ordered a group of men to disperse from a sidewalk in front of a Midtown shelter, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny.
After Brito “got confrontational with the officers,” police attempted to arrest him, leading to the scuffle, Kenny said. Members of the group began kicking the officers, video of the incident showed.
Body-camera footage released last week showed the chaotic altercation.
In the video, officers can be seen approaching a group of men and ordering them to leave the area in front of a shelter. As one of the men is walking away, he says in Spanish, “They look like Ugly Betty.”
Moments later, he is shoved into a doorway by an officer and arrested, setting off a melee between migrants and police. Several bystanders descended on the scrum, kicking at the officers and trying to stop them from arresting the man, the video showed.
Ulises Bohorquez, 21, was arrested Wednesday and charged with assault on a police officer, according to NYPD officials. Bohorquez was living at a migrant shelter on Randall’s Island, police said.
On Tuesday, a 17-year-old boy was arrested and charged with assault in the attack, police said.
