EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (PIX11) – MetLife Stadium in New Jersey will host the final of the 2026 World Cup, FIFA announced Sunday.
The final of the men’s World Cup will take place in East Rutherford on July 19, 2026.
New York and New Jersey submitted a joint bid to bring World Cup games to the region. Last year, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said MetLife Stadium was competing with AT&T Stadium in Texas to host the tournament's final.
"Between New Jersey and New York City, we've got it all. World-class hotels, restaurants, stadiums, theaters, attractions, transportation," Murphy said in a joint video announcement. "In fact, in many ways, we've got the whole world right in our backyard, with more than 600 languages and dialects spoken across our region. There is nowhere that better captures the breadth and diversity of the world's greatest game than New York City and our great Garden State."
The 2026 World Cup is being jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada. The 2026 World Cup will be the largest in the tournament’s history, featuring an expanded field of 48 countries.
The opening match of the 2026 World Cup will be played at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on June 11, FIFA announced. USA's opening match will be played in Los Angeles on June 12. Canada's opening match will be played in Toronto on June 12.
The U.S. last hosted the men’s World Cup in 1994. Giants Stadium, as it was then known, hosted seven games in that tournament, including a quarterfinal and semifinal match.
