Instant messaging apps like
allow users to connect their accounts on their PCs either via the app or a web version. However, the process of linking accounts requires scanning a QR code but this is about to change, at least for
Google Messages
.
Google Messages is rolling out
Account-based “Device pairing” that does not require users to scan QR codes.
As per a report by 9to5google, users have been greeted by a “Message on your other devices” prompt: “Continue your conversations when you sign in to your Google Account from your other devices.”
Users in the TOI Tech-Gadgets Now team also received a similar message when they opened the Google Messages app.
How to set up account-based Device pairing
You can open the Messages app and if you have received the capability, you’ll notice a pop-up message. If, by chance, you have missed the message on your phone, you can tap the profile image in the top-right corner and open “Device pairing.”
- After tapping the option you will be taken to a “Device pairing” screen.
- Users can either pair their laptops via web version or another smartphone that uses the same account number.
- To set up messages on the web, go to messages.google.web on the browser
- You will be prompted to confirm your Google Account (Gmail address).
- After tapping “Continue,” you’re instructed to “Open the Messages app on your phone” and “Match the emoji that shows up here and on your phone.”
- You will have a choice to select an emoji to match the one on the web screen on “Trying to pair another device?” sheet.
- Once done, you are signed in.
Users can also pair a tablet or another phone, and Google will specifically note/name what Android device is in use – just like the way users can see in WhatsApp. Moreover, users can also use the old QR Code-based way to link the app.
