Meet two artists using iPad and MacBook to create immersive artworks

At the

India Art Fair

2024 in New Delhi, there are artists who have installations that have been created, developed or showcased on the

iPad

or Mac. One of them is

Ornithoscope

, built on

MacBook Pro

and

iPad Pro

. It is an immersive audiovisual experience lets the audience explore changes in India’s avian biodiversity over the last 15 years. It is quite fascinating to look at as there is just a projection screen and an iPad Pro.

There are six speakers that surround the screen. A viewer needs to choose a state or union territory to explore. Once they do that, the speakers produce surround sound of corresponding bird sounds from that region. The effects of urbanisation and deforestation become alarmingly clear as users move a slider between 2008 and 2022.
Created by Aaron “Myles” Pereira and

Ameya Shinde

, the artists’ creative processes are simultaneously independent and intertwined. Shinde creates independent artworks for each region that depict unique local bird species, handcrafted using

Procreate

on iPad Pro with

Apple

Pencil. Pereira then imports the designs into his MacBook Pro with M3 Max chip and distorts them using a technique called multiple instancing.
Sadhna Prasad

, a muralist and illustrator, has a project called I’ll Be Back. “I want my audience to visit the world I create, and then come back and make a difference.” Prasad has used Procreate and Procreate Dreams on iPad Pro to create a large-scale mural. It shows two worlds: One is the result of unsustainable living, and the other is the outcome if humanity reforms its ways. She then used the Artivive app to turn the mural into an interactive augmented reality (AR) experience for the audience. The attention to detail in the mural and the use of AR genuinely leaves one impressed. Ask Prasad what her inspiration was and she says “When I enter a natural space, I see ecosystems of insects, organisms, and plants. They exist in perfect balance. Hopefully, humans can also learn to live in harmony with other life on this planet.”

Apple has provided Prasad with a strong foundation for her artistic practice. “Procreate on iPad Pro with Apple Pencil changed my life,” she enthuses. “The smoothness and the functionality make it perfect for an artist. Together with my MacBook Pro, I can use my iPad Pro as a second screen, giving me more space to work with.”
