Mayor Eric Adams talks How Many Stops Act, explains veto decision

NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) -- Mayor Eric Adam joined PIX11 News Tuesday morning as the New York City Council is poised to override the mayor's veto on the How Many Stops Act.

The act requires the NYPD to collect information including race and gender about nearly every interaction it has with the public. However, the mayor vetoed the bill arguing that the extra reporting requirements would only bog down officers in paperwork, putting public safety at risk.

"These are not stops. These are inquiries," Mayor Adams said. "A person that is part of a level 1 [stop] is free to leave any time and it is not the same as stopping someone because of a criminal investigation or if you think someone committed a crime."
