NEW YORK (PIX11) – New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced that the next round of budget cuts for city agencies has been canceled due to better-than-expected economic performance in 2023 and cuts in spending for asylum seekers.
The city will be cutting an additional 10% of its migrant budget on top of a previous 20% cut. These cuts have already saved the city $1.7 billion, according to Adams.
The city is also lifting its hiring freeze, officials said.
"Jobs are up, crime is down, tourists are back, and we are delivering for working-class New Yorkers every day," Adams said in a press release.
Adams announced "extremely painful" budget cuts to city agencies last year due to the migrant crisis and expiring federal stimulus aid. He then rolled back on some of the cuts, including spending on the FDNY and the NYPD.
