NEW YORK (PIX11) – New York City is looking to make a change to its sanctuary status following a series of crimes committed by migrants, Mayor Eric Adams said.
He's calling for ICE to be involved as soon as migrants accused of committing crimes are arrested, so the NYPD can help start the deportation process. It currently takes a conviction before an undocumented person accused of a crime will be turned over to federal authorities.
"We cannot have the small number of migrants, who have identified they are going to be dangerous, hide under the law," he said.
City Council Republican minority leader Joe Borelli is on the mayor’s side.
"If we're going to allow people to come here, or even if it's illegally, the line has to stop when they start committing crimes, especially violent crimes," Borelli said.
He's at odds with the majority of his City Council counterparts.
"We do not want to go down the slippery slope of peeling back protections, what we saw years ago was ICE being in schools and hospitals, that is never something that should happen," said Councilmember Carlina Rivera.
Adams said his administration has made overwhelming efforts for asylum seekers to move on from shelter life. The discovery of more than 70 migrants living in a Queens furniture store doesn't undermine what the city has done, and it instead highlights a housing crisis, he said.
The migrants found in the Queens building haven't been accused of criminal wrongdoing, according to officials.
