For a brief moment this offseason, it looked like Matthew Stafford’s days in Los Angeles might be numbered. Trade rumors swirled. The Rams reportedly opened the door for other teams to reach out. And after everything Stafford has accomplished in a Rams uniform, including delivering a Super Bowl title four seasons ago, that uncertainty felt jarring.
However, when the dust settled, one truth remained clear: The Rams and Stafford are still better together.
CBS Sports’ Tyler Sullivan put it best when naming one reason for optimism for every NFL team after the 2025 NFL Draft and free agency. For the Rams, it’s that "Matthew Stafford is still in L.A."
It seemed to get pretty dicey for a moment as it relates to Matthew Stafford's future with the Rams. The organization even allowed their Super Bowl-winning QB to speak with prospective teams in the event of a trade. In the end, however, Stafford and the Rams realized they were better together than apart and agreed to a two-year, $84 million extension. With Stafford intact under center, the Rams should continue to be a key threat in the NFC, especially after they took the eventual Super Bowl champion Eagles to the brink during the playoffs last year.
Stafford’s decision to stay and the team’s decision to reinvest speaks volumes. The two sides recently finalized a two-year, $84 million extension, ensuring stability at the game’s most important position and keeping a proven winner under center for the foreseeable future.
The former 2009 first-overall pick still has one of the league’s livest arms. He’s gritty, experienced, and composed in big moments. He nearly knocked off the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles in the playoffs last year, pushing them to the brink in a game that came down to the final moments. With a few key pieces added this offseason and a strong draft class in place, the Rams are poised to remain a real factor in the NFC.
L.A. might be in a bit of a transition, retooling on defense, developing young playmakers, but Stafford gives them a shot. Every Sunday. Every drive. Every snap.
There’s something to be said about knowing who your leader is, and the Rams know theirs.
