NEW DELHI: Shan Masood and Babar Azam on Sunday etched their names in history with a stellar performance, recording Pakistan's highest-ever opening partnership against South Africa.
The duo surpassed the previous record of 137, set by Imran Farhat and Taufeeq Umar in Faisalabad back in 2003, by constructing a magnificent 205-run stand in the second innings of the ongoing Test.

Facing a daunting deficit after following on, Masood and Babar played with precision and flair, giving Pakistan a glimmer of hope.

At the time of Babar's dismissal, Masood led from the front with a commanding knock of 102 not out, hitting 14 4s in an innings full of authority and composure.

Before falling prey to Marco Jansen's delivery, Babar, known for his class and grace, complemented his partner brilliantly, crafting a fluent 81, featuring ten 4s.
This stand, significant not just for breaking a 22-year-old record but also for its context in the match, has sparked conversations about Pakistan’s fighting spirit.

Highest Opening Partnerships vs South Africa

  • Babar Azam & Shan Masood (2025): 205 runs
  • Imran Farhat & Taufeeq Umar (2003): 137 runs
  • Khurram Manzoor & Shan Masood (2013): 135 runs
  • Mohammad Hafeez & Taufeeq Umar (2010): 105 runs
  • Aamer Sohail & Saeed Anwar (1995-1998): 101 runs

Having struggled with a first-innings collapse for just 194, the pair’s resilience has been a key highlight of the game.
South Africa, spearheaded by Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen, seemed to lose steam against the flawless approach of the Pakistani openers. Despite Rabada's fierce pace and the guile of spinners like Keshav Maharaj, the pair’s determination remained unshaken.
With today's 205-run stand, Babar and Masood’s current total as an opening pair stands at a remarkable 207, underlining their potential as a formidable duo at the top of the order.
The new record adds another feather to their caps, symbolising the dawn of a promising partnership.
