Mapusa court sentences three in separate North Goa assault cases

Panaji: A Mapusa court sentenced three persons in two separate assault incidents in Calangute and Mapusa and directed them to pay compensation to the victims.In the first incident in 2020, the two accused persons on a scooter allegedly assaulted a person over the issue of splashing water while the complainant was travelling on the road in his car at Verla, Canca.

They criminally trespassed into the complainant’s property, abused him, damaged his car, and assaulted him with a wooden rib after he splashed water on them, which accumulated on the road.The court convicted them for intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of public peace and sentenced the two accused, Ummar Kacchi and Atharva Pednekar, to undergo simple imprisonment. They were also ordered to pay a fine of Rs 1,000 and compensation of Rs 5,000 each to the complainant, Digamber Kalangutkar, out of which Rs 2,000 is to be forfeited in favour of the state.In the second case, the Mapusa court sentenced Joaquim Francisco Fernandes and Justino Fernandes for voluntarily causing hurt. The complainant, Mario Lopes, alleged they assaulted and threatened to kill him in 2022. The court directed them to pay Lopes a fine of Rs 1,000 and compensation of Rs 5,000 each, out of which Rs 2,000 will be received in favour of the court.
