GUWAHATI: Amidst political tension, the BJP-led Manipur government granted on Wednesday conditional approval for Congress MP

Rahul Gandhi

's "Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra" after eight days of uncertainty. The consent, however, comes with restrictions, permitting only the "flagging off of the yatra with a limited number of participants" at a public ground in

Imphal

East district this Sunday.

Rahul, accompanied by Congress chief

Mallikarjun Kharge

, is scheduled to arrive in Imphal on Sunday morning, and the state Congress leadership is yet to finalise the venue after the imposed restrictions. Congress is exploring alternative locations outside Imphal for the event.
Earlier in the day, Manipur Congress president Keisham Megachandra said that chief minister

N Biren Singh

had declined permission for using the venue at Hatta Kangjeibung for the yatra's flagging-off ceremony. The reported denial of permission triggered a political slugfest. Assam Congress president Bhupen Borah alleged that the state's BJP-led government is also attempting to obstruct the yatra.
The Manipur government's decision was conveyed after a meeting between Congress leaders and CM Singh. The order from the office of the Imphal East district magistrate cited the expectation of a huge crowd during the opening ceremony and the prevailing law and order situation as reasons for imposing restrictions.

The order also mentioned the enforcement of Section 144 of CrPC in Imphal East district and the scheduling of a state function for the commemoration of Armed Forces Veteran Day on Sunday.
On January 5, the district administration forwarded Congress' application seeking permission to the state government. The move came after the SP submitted a report indicating the anticipation of a large crowd at the venue during the opening ceremony of the yatra.

The yatra is scheduled to cover 6,713km in buses and on foot, traversing 110 districts, 100 Lok Sabha seats, and 337 assembly segments in 66 days. The yatra is expected to reach Nagaland on January 15, enter Assam on January 18, and culminate in Mumbai on March 20.
