NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is warning New Yorkers of the rise of thefts on Venmo, PayPal, Zelle and other payment apps.
“No longer is the smartphone itself the most lucrative target for scammers and robbers – it’s the financial apps contained within,” said District Attorney Bragg.
The district attorney sent out letters on Wednesday to payment services, asking for more security measures for their users. Some security measures he proposed were two-factor verification, lowering limits on daily transfers, and implementing wait times on some transactions.
In the letters, D.A. Bragg notes the ease with which “offenders can collect five- and even six-figure windfalls in a matter of minutes is incentivizing a large number of individuals to commit these crimes, which are creating serious financial, and in some cases physical, harm to our residents.”
