MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) – A 26-year-old man was shot in the head inside The Music Building in Manhattan overnight Friday, according to the NYPD.

Violence broke out on the 11th floor of 584 8th Ave. around 12:41 a.m., police said.

The Music Building rents space to local bands, artists and musicians who are starting in the industry, according to its website. It's been a staple on 8th Avenue since 1979.

Artists such as Madonna, Blondie, Billy Idol and Metallica have rehearsed in one of the building's 69 studio spaces, according to The Music Building's website.

An employee told PIX11 News that studio spaces are only rented monthly and there is 24/7 security plus cameras in the lobby and on every floor.

The man is in critical condition at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, police said.

Police are still working on a motive and the suspects' relationship with the victim. They also haven't recovered a gun at the scene.
