Man shot in head at famed music space in Midtown

MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- Police are still searching for suspects following an overnight shooting at a famous music studio in Midtown Manhattan.

Known as the Music Building, located on Eighth Avenue between 38th and 39th streets, it famously rents studio space to musicians small and big alike.

The shooting happened on the 11th floor just after 12:30 a.m. Friday. It left a 26-year-old man in critical condition after he was shot in the head, according to police.

“The Music Building is really the last of its kind,” said musician Jake Rich.

Rich spoke glowingly about the history of this building, which rents short-term and long-term recording space.

“The Strokes wrote ‘Is This It' in this building,” he said.

Madonna is said to have lived on the top floor for a time.

“Her signature is on the wall,” Rich said.

Rich, like others coming and going Friday, was stunned to find out about the overnight shooting.

Police only have a vague description of four suspects, including a man in his 20s wearing a Nike sweatshirt at the time.

Rich said since COVID this section of Midtown has felt less safe, which he said is unfortunate for the Music Building.

“All the rehearsal spaces have been moving out to Brooklyn and Queens and Gowanus,” Rich said. “Midtown used to be that spot for music with all the recording studios and they’ve just gotten priced out.”

But even those new businesses get skittish when they hear about shootings like this.

Areeb Sheikh and his business partner are about to open up a legal cannabis shop "Indoor" two storefronts down.

“Everyone gets a little bit wary and worried about what’s happening on the streets of Eighth Avenue,” he said.
