THE BRONX, N.Y. – The man killed in Monday’s Bronx subway shooting was an innocent bystander, police said Tuesday.
Obed Beltran-Sanchez, a 35-year-old unhoused man, was fatally shot Monday in a shooting at the Mount Eden Avenue subway station that left another five people injured ranging from 14 to 71 years old, according to the NYPD.
The shooting started about 4:35 p.m. on the northbound 4 train platform, police officials said.
Two groups of people, initially described as teenagers, fighting on the train, according to Chief of Transit Michael Kemper. As the doors opened up at Mount Eden Avenue, at least one person started firing shots, Kemper said.
More shots were fired on the platform – hitting some innocent bystanders, officials said. Even still, police said they did not believe the shooting was random.
The suspected shooters had not been arrested a day later, but police on Tuesday released photos of two suspects, both thought to be in their 20s, according to the NYPD.
“To have a shooting like this in the subway system is extremely rare and unacceptable,” said Kemper. “The subway system is safe, this is not the norm.”
