Man dies during arrest in the Bronx; NYPD opens internal investigation

ALLERTON, The Bronx (PIX11) – The NYPD is investigating after a man died while being taken into custody in the Bronx Tuesday night.

Officers attempted to stop a 34-year-old man on a scooter shortly before 9:30 p.m. in Allerton, according to authorities. The suspect allegedly took off, police said.

Officers found the man nearby after he allegedly struck two vehicles and a light pole. The man suffered a medical episode during the arrest and was pronounced dead at NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi.

The man reportedly told officers he had chest pain and appeared to have had a heart attack, sources told PIX11 News.

The official cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner.
