TOMS RIVER, N.J. (PIX11) – A man died shortly after being arrested in Toms River, New Jersey Friday, according to New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin.
Authorities with the Toms River Police Department and Ocean County Sheriff's Office tried to arrest the man around 1 p.m. at a gas station on Route 37 near West End Avenue, according to the Attorney General’s office.
The man told officers he was having a medical episode from inside his parked vehicle, at which point police arrested him and “provide[d] medical attention on-scene,” according to Platkin’s office.
The man, whose identity was not yet released, was rushed to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead just over an hour later, authorities said.
Police were initially engaging the man for “outstanding warrants,” according to the Attorney General.
The Attorney General’s office opened an investigation into the death, as is customary for any in-custody death.
