EAST FLATBUSH, Brooklyn (PIX11) – A man was caught on camera trying to run over Jewish students with his car outside of a Brooklyn yeshiva Wednesday morning, according to the NYPD.
The man, identified by police as 58-year-old Asghar Ali, was driving on East 55th Street in East Flatbush around 11:30 a.m. He allegedly drove up onto the sidewalk, right on the heels of Jewish students scrambling for safety, according to authorities.
Ali also allegedly spewed antisemitic slurs from behind the wheel before he was arrested at the scene, police said.
Gov. Kathy Hochul praised the NYPD for the arrest on social media, saying, "Hate crimes have no place in New York, and will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law."
Ali is facing charges including attempted murder as a hate crime.
Hate crimes targeting Jewish and Muslim people were up by 100% in April over the same time last year, city crime data showed.
A rally will be held outside City Hall Thursday morning to call on council members to take new action in preventing antisemitic attacks.
