Man allegedly drives SUV onto LIRR tracks: MTA

NEW YORK (PIX11) – Police have apprehended a man accused of driving a black SUV on the Main Line tracks of the Long Island Rail Road Sunday afternoon.

The vehicle was seen traveling between Bellerose and Floral Park Stations.

Police say the driver entered the tracks west of the Elmont-UBS Arena station. The driver traveled around half a mile east until two of the vehicle’s tires became severely damaged.

The tires ignited on fire, causing major damage to the third rail and other track infrastructure, police say.

The driver, Basilio Hidalgo, 40, of Brooklyn, was charged with reckless endangerment, criminal trespassing, and driving while intoxicated.

The vehicle was removed from the tracks by 8:30 p.m. Service was fully restored to the Hempstead Branch around 8:40 p.m.
