MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) --- A man is accused of trying to rape three young women in four hours in Union Square on New Year's Eve, authorities said.
Christopher Marrero, 23, allegedly followed one of the women from Brooklyn to Manhattan on the subway, and attacked a woman in a cafe bathroom and another in a building vestibule on Dec. 31, 2023, prosecutors said.
Marrero allegedly tried to pull a 21-year-old woman into an alleyway before she was able to get away at around 10:15 a.m. Less than two hours later, the defendant followed a 24-year-old woman into a cafe bathroom near West 14th Street and Fifth Avenue, pushed her face against the door, and tried to take off her pants, authorities said. Marrero ran out of the cafe after the screaming woman was able to open the bathroom door.
At around 2 p.m., Marrero grabbed a woman by the waist in the vestibule of her apartment building near Union Square Park before she was able to escape, prosecutors said.
“From trailing a woman across boroughs on the subway, to pushing his way into a bathroom, to following a woman into an apartment building, these allegations represent some of New Yorkers’ worst fears," Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said.
Marrero was charged with attempted rape, sexual abuse, and attempted sexual abuse, according to court records. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on Monday.
Marrero's attorney could not immediately be reached.
