BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- The Lunar New Year is underway with events happening throughout New York City's five boroughs, including a celebration in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood.
Brooklynites showed up in big numbers to celebrate the borough’s Lunar New Year parade. The event was a spectacular display of Chinese heritage and pride. The much-awaited lion dance delighted the crowd on 8th Avenue.
“I feel proud to be here because I’m Chinese and I’m celebrating my culture,” said one paradegoer.
“We come here on this happy day to be with family and friends,” Michelle Liu said.
The Brooklyn Chinese American Association has been organizing the festival and march since 1988. It was suspended for two years during the COVID-19 pandemic, but since its restoration, its support is even bigger than before. Vibrant balloon displays served as the backdrop for the most adorable tiny performers. There were also tons of fireworks.
“I like it, just celebrating with our neighbors,” said Nancy Avilez.
While the western New Year is on Jan. 1, many Asian countries celebrate the Lunar New Year, which follows a different calendar. According to the Chinese zodiac, this year is the Year of the Dragon, which is associated with prosperity.
Political and community leaders all took turns wishing everyone a happy new year. Some native speakers even addressed the crowd in Chinese, a way to show solidarity with the Asian community, which is one of the fastest-growing populations in New York City.
“It brings good luck,” said Amy Huang.
In addition to the Year of the Dragon celebration and emphasis, there was also a lot of talk about unity and standing up against Asian hate.
