NEW DELHI: One of the most controversial talking points of the
2024 Indian Premier League
was the heated exchange between Lucknow Super Giants owner
Sanjiv Goenka
and team skipper
KL Rahul
.
The incident occurred after LSG's heavy defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad, who chased down a target of 166 in just 9.4 overs, winning by 10 wickets.
Following the match, Goenka was caught on camera having a heated conversation with Rahul, quickly becoming a major discussion among fans and cricket experts.
During an interaction on YouTuber
Shubhankar Mishra
's show 'Unplugged,' LSG spinner
Amit Mishra
shed light on the controversial incident and shared some previously unknown details.
Mishra explained that Goenka's disappointment stemmed from the team's back-to-back losses. Against Kolkata Knight Riders, LSG lost by 98 runs, and the match against SRH was finished within 10 overs.
"He (Goenka) was disappointed. We lost two back-to-back matches very badly. Against KKR, we lost by some 90-100 runs and against SRH, the match was finished within 10 overs. It felt like we were bowling them during a net practice session. If I am so angry about it, will someone who has actually put money into the team not feel angry?" Mishra explained on the podcast.
Mishra downplayed the severity of the confrontation, suggesting that the media had exaggerated the incident.
"It was not a huge deal. But I later came to know that he said that the bowling was very bad and the team should have shown some fight. It looked like you had completely surrendered. But I feel people and the media hyped it up a bit," he added.
Speculation has arisen regarding KL Rahul's future with LSG, with reports suggesting he might not be retained ahead of IPL 2025. However, no official statements have been made by either the team or Rahul.
"It does not matter if he is in the Indian team or not. But a person who has the right mentality for T20s should be the captain. Someone who plays for the team should be captain. I am sure LSG will look for a better captain," Mishra said.
