NEW YORK (PIX11) -- In the heart of East New York on Snediker Avenue, PIX11 News went inside one of the apartments given away in the New York City Affordable Housing Lottery.
During a housing crisis, it is a place of hope for this community, and many of the families moving in are formerly homeless.
Shakara Negron, 25, is a proud mother of three, born and raised in the Bronx. Negron said she applied to the supportive housing program last year and only waited six months for her two-bedroom affordable apartment. She loves it. She will never forget when she got her keys and moved into her new two-bedroom apartment last December. Now, she said her life has completely changed.
Negron was one of the first residents to move into a new complex on Snediker Avenue. It was created and built with Help USA, the New York City Housing Preservation and Development and the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
The CEO of Dan Lehman said it’s not just affordable housing. It’s a community that provides free childcare and mental health services.
NYC’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development commissioner Adolfo Carrion Jr. said there are currently dozens of open housing lotteries across the city. HPD has 36 open, affordable housing lotteries on NYC Housing Connects.
New Yorkers looking for affordable housing may find the application process daunting, but luckily, New York City offers several resources to ease the process.
