DIX HILLS, N.Y. (PIX11) -- There's no education quite like a hands-on education. For some students on Long Island, that couldn't have been more true on Friday.

A science teacher at Half Hollow Hills High School East in Dix Hills was mid-lesson about earthquakes when a 4.8-magnitude earthquake started shaking her classroom.

"The ground starts to shake, and students are grabbing their desks thinking I'm joking with them. But when they saw the look on my face, I said, 'I think we might be having one right now,'" said Catherine Jennings, a ninth grade teacher. "I couldn't believe the timing of it."
