Less than 2% of crime in NYC occurs on the subway: NYPD boss

NEW YORK (PIX11) --- NYPD Transit Chief Michael Kemper joined PIX11 Morning News to discuss subway safety issues, fare evaders, subway surfing, and a few high-profile incidents on the transit system.

In 2023, 1.8% of crime in New York City occurred in the subway system, which would surprise most New Yorkers because their perception is worse, Kemper said on PIX11 Morning News.

"Perception of fear is real," he said.

Aside from the high-profile cases, like the man who was fatally shot on a Brooklyn subway on Sunday, commuters mostly see fare evaders and disorderly conduct, Kemper said.
