UPPER WEST SIDE, Manhattan (PIX11) – A large advertisement that’s hanging at a luxury condominium building in New York City is illegal and faces multiple penalties, city officials said.
The advertisement, located at 720 West End Ave. near West 95th Street on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, is advertising the condominiums that will open in the building this spring.
“Up End the West End,” the advertisement reads, with the condo building's website listed at the bottom.
The Upper West Side news site West Side Rag reported that some residents have complained about the large advertisement, including one person who called it an “eyesore.”
Inspectors with the New York City Department of Buildings issued four violations with penalties in connection to the advertisement.
The advertisement exceeds the maximum square footage and height allowed for a residential district, according to the Department of Buildings. The advertisement is also unlawfully hanging from a protective structure, city officials said. The building owner will also face a penalty for doing work without a permit, according to the Department of Buildings.
In total, $6,250 in penalties will be assigned to the building owner, according to the Department of Buildings. A $2,500 penalty will be given to the scaffolding contractor, city officials said.
The New York City Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings will hold a hearing on the violations. If the violations are fixed before the hearing, then the building owner may not have to pay the penalties. However, the $2,500 penalty the scaffolding contractor is facing is not mitigable and would have to be paid, city officials said.
The building ownership at 720 West End Ave. was unable to be reached for comment.
