climbed three notches on Thursday, hours before this

winter

's second

rain spell

, reducing the gap between the maximum and minimum temperature from 7°C to

3°C

in the course of a day - the narrowest gap this season.
From 6.45 pm on Thursday, Kolkata received a spell of steady drizzle.

Five days since the season saw its lowest minimum temperature of 12.6° Celsius, the mercury was on a gradual rise until it shot up three degrees from 13.4° Celsius to 16.3° Celsius between Wednesday and Thursday. Meanwhile, the maximum temperature fell to its seasonal lowest of 19.2° Celsius, seven notches below normal.

The temperature change was predicted to be brought about by a shower spell between Wednesday night and Thursday morning, but despite its low magnitude, the rain was able to narrow down the gap between maximum and minimum temperatures. "The maximum temperature is unlikely to change much for the rest of the week but the minimum temperature can fall slightly. Thursday saw the narrowest gap between the maximum and minimum temperatures this season. The difference can increase to 5 to 6 degrees by next week," said Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) director GK Das.

A cyclonic circulation approaching Bengal on Wednesday brought the biggest splash of rainfall to Sriniketan, Birbhum - 30 mm. While Thursday remained foggy and overcast until the evening, the chance of rain continuing in Kolkata is very low for the rest of this week.
Although Kolkata only saw traces, Thursday marked the second occasion of rainfall this winter. The last time it rained in Kolkata was a 31 mm spell on December 6 and 7, triggered by Cyclone Michaung. December got six times its normal rain count, making it the second wettest since 2010. In contrast, Jan last year witnessed a total of 13 mm of rainfall.
The chance of rainfall until the middle of next week is very low, according to the weather office. However, Friday may remain overcast. The maximum and minimum temperature on Friday are likely to be 21° and 15° Celsius, respectively.
