MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) – Students at a New York City public school in Manhattan received handouts on Thursday, educating them on their rights if they should encounter an ICE agent.
The handout appeared to have information compiled and distributed by the Catholic Charities of New York.
One side of the sheet shared information on the right to remain silent, the right to refuse an ICE agent from entering one’s home or searching one’s belongings unless they have a warrant, and the right to speak with an attorney.
The handout also gave instructions on what to do if one should encounter an ICE agent on the street or if they knock on your door.
Information advised students against signing any documents from an ICE agent, not giving false or foreign documents, not running away or resisting arrest and not responding to questions about their immigration status if they’re stopped on the street.
A spokesperson for the New York City Department of Education told PIX11 News that the handouts did not come from their department. PIX11 has also reached out to Catholic Charities for comment but did not hear back at the time of publishing.
The Know Your Rights handout comes after President Donald Trump issued an executive order allowing federal immigration authorities to conduct arrests at sensitive locations and after ICE raid began in New York on Tuesday.
